The third oldest higher education institution in England, the University of Durham was established in 1832. As a collegiate university, it is made up of 16 colleges. The most recent of those Josephine Butler College opened its doors in 2006. Jointly, the colleges offer more than 200 courses, all with an outstanding quality of teaching. 17 of the university’s subjects are in the top 100 world ranking.

Durham is a member of the renowned Russell Group of 24 research institutions and other international organisations. Thanks to its prestigious status, the university is often considered an alternative to Oxford and Cambridge. It has a long history of holding spots in the top ten of all national university league tables and it is in the top 100 of world universities according to QS World University Rankings. It also boasts some of the highest employability levels – it is 88th globally.

Durham is home to 18,000 students from more than 150 countries, about 30% of its population, including staff, came from outside the UK. To support its diverse and talented international community, the university offers a range of scholarships, university and third party-funded. It partners with the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission, Chevening, Marshall and Fulbright, as well as other funds sponsoring students of specific departments and countries of origin.

Overview

Durham’s main campus is adjacent to a world heritage site featuring the 11th century castle and cathedral. The city of Durham sits in the northeast of England. It is a short train ride from large UK cities and breathtaking landscapes. The city is recognised as one of the safest in the country, with a lot of entertainment options for students. The Durham campus is quite compact. All of its facilities are located just a few minutes from each other. The smaller Queens’ Campus in Stockton-on-Tees is situated 20 minutes away from Durham. The two campuses are connected by a bus service.

The university reserves accommodation for all first-year international students on the condition that they meet the deadlines. The majority of accommodation options are fully catered, with great facilities for student activities and beyond.

The International Office provides induction programmes designed to help students improve their study skills. It also runs English lesson programmes for students from overseas.
