QS World University Ranking by Subject 2022: Swansea University achieves its best ranking

Swansea University has delivered its best-ever performance in a leading global university ranking by subject released this week.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2022 is produced by global higher education analysts QS Quacquarelli Symonds. To compile the rankings, QS assessed academic reputation, employer reputation and research impact, analysing over 14.7 million unique research papers, producing close to 96 million citations. 1,543 institutions were ranked across 51 specific subjects, categorised into 5 broad subject areas.

Swansea University’s growing global reputation has seen it achieve its best performance in this subject ranking to date.

According to the latest ranking Swansea University has:

  • achieved world ranking in all five of the broad subject areas featured in the QS World Rankings by Subject 2022, with the addition of Social Sciences and Management this year at 306th

  • increased the number of specific subjects achieving a world rank from 13 to 20

  • 15 of the 20 specific ranked subjects inside the world top 300.

  • secured the largest leap up the table of all subjects with Business & Management now a top 200 ranked subject (151-200).

  • achieved similar levels of improvement with Computer Science and Biological Sciences, which are now ranked in the top 300 (251-300) and top 350 (301-350) respectively.

  • gained a top 25% (119th) world ranking in the Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing Engineering subject category of the 520 universities ranked for this.

  • entered the ranking for the first time for Classics & Ancient History which is ranked 51-80.

  • achieved a first time ranking for Sports-related subjects which is rank 51-100.

Other new subjects appearing this year are Psychology (201-250), Modern Languages (251-300), Pharmacy & Pharmacology (301-350), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (401-450), Economics & Econometrics (451-500).

In the ranking, universities are compared across a range of metrics designed to measure their performance against research excellence (research reputation and research citation impact) and employers’ preferences for graduate recruitment.

An overview of the subject performances in this year’s ranking shows the subjects have improved academic and employer reputations as well as seeing good levels of improvement in research citations.

Professor Helen Griffiths, Swansea University’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, Innovation and Impact said:

We are absolutely delighted with these results that further recognise the excellent research and impact delivered at Swansea University. This year’s ranking now better reflect the quality and breadth of the subjects we offer here. The successes of our dedicated and excellent academic staff are recognised in these rankings. These are top subject rankings compared against the very best universities in the world and to see our subjects rising up there is very rewarding.

This improvement in the QS global rankings and our high UK league table ranks such as 24th in the Guardian Good University Guide clearly show that Swansea University continues to excel at both Teaching and Research.
